Who they are
Aatrox was once an honored Ascended champion of Shurima. He was betrayed by the Aspects of Targon and sealed inside his own weapon.
He now takes mortal hosts and wages war across Runeterra, driven by rage and a desperate wish for oblivion, while hungering for vengeance on those who imprisoned him.
Their story belongs to Wanderers and also touches Shurima. Demons, spirits and ancient survivors that belong to no single place.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
An Ascended champion
Aatrox began as a noble, loyal mortal warrior in Shurima's golden age. He was among the first to undergo Ascension and became a God-Warrior, strong enough to kill Spirit Gods.
- Step 2
Icathia
When Icathia rebelled and turned to the Void, Aatrox answered Setaka's call to defend the empire. Fighting those horrors scarred him and cost him his wings.
- Step 3
The Darkin War
After Emperor Azir died, the Ascended fell into civil war and came to be called the Darkin. Aatrox led fellow Darkin, among them Rhaast, Varus and Naafiri, and came to hate Xolaani for using hemomancy to puppet others.
- Step 4
Sealed in the sword
Fearing annihilation, the Aspects of Targon intervened. The Aspect of War and Twilight tricked him and pulled him into his own sword, the first Darkin to be imprisoned. A mortal wielder became his first host, and he learned to take bodies and feed on flesh. Over time he gave up hope of release and sought oblivion through apocalyptic war.
- Step 5
Defeats and vengeance
The winged twins Kayle and Morgana beat him when he attacked early Demacia. He then went to Targon and drove his blade through the Aspect of War, Pantheon, though the host Atreus survived and cut off Aatrox's sword arm. In the Freljord he slaughtered most of Tryndamere's clan and left Tryndamere nearly dead.
- Step 6
Wandering
Aatrox now wanders with no fixed home, looking for hosts. He can sense Xolaani stirring and is gathering Darkin for a final fight in Icathia.
Turning points
- Ascending as a God-Warrior
- Being sealed in his sword by the Aspects
- Losing his sword arm to Atreus
- Destroying Tryndamere's clan
Where their story stands now
Aatrox still seeks oblivion and vengeance against those who imprisoned him. His feud with Xolaani is heading toward Icathia, Pantheon and Atreus want another fight, and he may be planning to make Tryndamere a host.
