Who they are
Nocturne is a demon born from nightmares during the Rune Wars, shaped from shadow and wielding curved blades. It descends on the waking world to feed on the fear that thrives in darkness.
It once terrorized the Demacian village of Fossbarrow until it was driven out of a tomb there.
Their story belongs to Wanderers. Demons, spirits and ancient survivors that belong to no single place.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
Born of nightmares
Nocturne arose near the end of the Rune Wars, when desperate mages turned to shadow magic and entered the spirit realm. It was born from the collective nightmares there, though how is unclear.
- Step 2
Starving
For centuries it fed on shadow mages who entered its realm. As they dwindled and the practice was forbidden, it starved for long periods until it learned how to enter the physical world.
- Step 3
Fossbarrow, long ago
A Demacian historian, Jens Tommen, haunted by studying the Shadow Isles, went to Fossbarrow for peace and Nocturne pursued him. Local legend says Fossian Crownguard fought it, and both fell from a cliff, with Fossian impaling it and dying of his wounds. The town built him a tomb in the mountainside.
- Step 4
Fossbarrow, again
Centuries later the fear of a young mage named Luca woke Nocturne in the tomb. It possessed him and spread paranoia and violence, driving a man named Aldo Dayan to murder. When Lux Crownguard came to investigate, Nocturne attacked her, but her brother Garen and Dauntless Vanguard soldiers intervened. Lux faced her own fears and, with Luca, forced the demon out, though she suspected it was not gone.
- Step 5
The Great Mage Rebellion
During the Rebellion it fed on Demacians' fears and stalked travelers. It confronted Sylas and Yops and tried to feed on their nightmares, but they fought and drove it off.
- Step 6
Piltover
In Piltover it tormented a man named Celwyn with nightmares about his son Abel being consumed, killed him in his sleep, and began pursuing Abel through dark mist.
Turning points
- Learning to enter the physical world
- Being driven from Fossbarrow by Lux, Garen and Luca
- Being resisted by Sylas and Yops
Where their story stands now
Nocturne is active in the physical world with no fixed home, once seen around the Rocky Highlands of Demacia. It lasts as long as frightened dreamers do, and it is not known whether it can be destroyed rather than just driven off.
