Who they are
Volibear is the storm-god of destruction. His fight with Ornn changed the fate of the Freljord.
Their story belongs to The Freljord. Three tribes, one frozen land, and something sealed beneath the ice.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
A god of storms
Volibear, once called Valhir, is one of the Freljord's old spirit gods, a being of storms, battle and war. He existed alongside siblings such as Ornn and Anivia in an age before mortals walked the tundra. His strength came both from the storms themselves and from the worship of his followers.
- Step 2
A rift with Ornn
Volibear and his brother Ornn were close at first, but they came to want opposite things. Ornn prized craft and civilization while Volibear despised civilization and the weakness he felt it brought. Their battle lasted days and destroyed a whole civilization, wiping out Ornn's followers and wrecking the land.
- Step 3
Lissandra
In the Freljord's early history Volibear fought the sorceress Lissandra and left her permanently blind. She then set out to oppose him, killing his shamans and anyone likely to join him and sabotaging worship of the old demigods, which badly weakened his power.
- Step 4
Allies of convenience
Volibear allied with the warrior Sejuani and the spirit walker Udyr against Lissandra's Frostguard and Ashe's Avarosan. He keeps his own motives for the Freljord and has little respect for Udyr, who refused the calling to join the Ursine shamans.
Turning points
- The days-long battle with Ornn that destroyed a civilization
- Blinding Lissandra and losing his shamans to her campaign
- Allying with Sejuani and Udyr against Lissandra and Ashe
Where their story stands now
Volibear lives in the Ursine lands of the Freljord and is sustained by storms, warfare and the worship that remains. He still wants the old untamed ways back, his feud with Lissandra is unresolved, and he and Ornn have not reconciled. His power rises and falls with mortal devotion.

Where this fits in the story
- The Freljord · step 1
The Watchers and the Iceborn
The Watchers, beings from the Void with no form of their own, turned humans of the Freljord into immortal Iceborn who served them and prepared the world for oblivion.
- The Freljord · step 2
The three sisters
Avarosa led an Iceborn rebellion against the Watchers, and her sister Lissandra wove a spell of True Ice that entombed them beneath the Howling Abyss. Lissandra paid for it with her sisters and now watches the seal.
- The Freljord · step 3
Ornn and Volibear
Demigods shaped the early Freljord. Ornn, the craftsman, withdrew after his conflict with the storm-god Volibear ended the Hearthblood civilization.
- The Freljord · step 4
Three tribes today
Ashe leads the Avarosan, who want a united Freljord. Sejuani leads the Winter's Claw, who follow raiding and tradition. Lissandra leads the Frostguard, who keep the seals. The True Ice holding the Watchers weakens a little more every year.
