Character · The Freljord

Anivia

Ancient demigod of the Freljord.

Who they are

Anivia is a demigod who helped shape the early Freljord and supported the rise of the Three Sisters.

Their story belongs to The Freljord. Three tribes, one frozen land, and something sealed beneath the ice.

Their story, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Born with the world

Anivia is an ancient demigod, born from the world itself alongside many siblings. Her birth is credited with bringing the first winters, and she is possibly the creator of True Ice. She takes the form of a large crystalline eagle of ice.

  2. Step 2

    Guardian of the first tribes

When mortal tribes reached ancient Vorrijaard, Anivia welcomed them and hid the vulnerable in sheltered valleys, and they worshipped her as a goddess. She once defended the land by calling a century-long blizzard that destroyed a southern army hunting its wild magic.

  3. Step 3

    The Three Sisters

Lissandra and her sisters Avarosa and Serylda sought to rule the Freljord. Her brother Volibear urged war, but Anivia argued for diplomacy and cooperation. Lissandra struck bargains with the Watchers and created the Iceborn, and the sisters slowly replaced the demigods as objects of worship.

  4. Step 4

    Death and return

Anivia has been killed many times and always comes back. One legend has her shattering her own body under the ice to stop corrupted Balestriders, and each rebirth is tied to a new age of the Freljord.

  5. Step 5

    A prank on Ornn

Her eldest brother Ornn, god of the forge, kept to himself. Legend says she tickled his nose while he slept, he sneezed fire, and his Horn Hall burned down. She has never admitted it.

  6. Step 6

    A new rebirth

Anivia has again hatched from her egg. She appeared to Ashe at the Throne of Avarosa, where Ashe found the True Ice bow, and she now favors Ashe as a possible uniter of the Freljord tribes. The Notai tribe reveres her in particular.

Turning points

  • Choosing diplomacy over war when the Three Sisters rose
  • Sacrificing herself against the corrupted Balestriders
  • Reappearing to Ashe at the Throne of Avarosa

Where their story stands now

Anivia is alive and watching over the Freljord. Shamans and spirit walkers do not know what great threat her rebirth announces, and it is unresolved whether Ashe can unite the tribes.

Where this fits in the story

  1. The Freljord · step 1

    The Watchers and the Iceborn

The Watchers, beings from the Void with no form of their own, turned humans of the Freljord into immortal Iceborn who served them and prepared the world for oblivion.

  2. The Freljord · step 2

    The three sisters

Avarosa led an Iceborn rebellion against the Watchers, and her sister Lissandra wove a spell of True Ice that entombed them beneath the Howling Abyss. Lissandra paid for it with her sisters and now watches the seal.

  3. The Freljord · step 3

    Ornn and Volibear

Demigods shaped the early Freljord. Ornn, the craftsman, withdrew after his conflict with the storm-god Volibear ended the Hearthblood civilization.

  4. The Freljord · step 4

    Three tribes today

Ashe leads the Avarosan, who want a united Freljord. Sejuani leads the Winter's Claw, who follow raiding and tradition. Lissandra leads the Frostguard, who keep the seals. The True Ice holding the Watchers weakens a little more every year.
