Who they are
Lissandra leads the Frostguard, the order that keeps the seals on the Watchers. Her spell of True Ice entombed them beneath the Howling Abyss, and she works to bury the truth about the Three Sisters.
Their story belongs to The Freljord. Three tribes, one frozen land, and something sealed beneath the ice.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
Three sisters
Lissandra lived in an ancient age when the physical and spiritual worlds were unstable. She and her sisters Avarosa and Serylda sought power over the mortal world. Volibear attacked Lissandra and blinded her.
- Step 2
The Watchers' bargain
Cut off from sight, she learned to walk in dreams and made contact with the Watchers, beings from beyond. She struck a deal that made her and her sisters Iceborn in exchange for preparing the world for the Void. She became the Watchers' intermediary.
- Step 3
War between sisters
Avarosa and Serylda grew tired of serving the Watchers. They asked Ornn to build the Howling Abyss so the Watchers could be sealed away. This sparked open war with Lissandra.
- Step 4
The seal
As the sisters' armies marched on her, the Watchers broke through into the world. At the Abyss Lissandra sacrificed her sisters and their armies and used ancient magic to seal the Watchers beneath ice. It saved Runeterra but cost her everything.
- Step 5
The Frostguard
The seal proved weak, since the trapped Watchers twisted True Ice into Dark Ice and haunted her dreams. She founded the Frostguard to gather True Ice and keep the seal strong. The order also worked to erase the story of the three sisters from Freljord history.
- Step 6
Nunu and Willump
When a boy named Nunu and the last True Yeti, Willump, went toward the Heart of the Blue, Lissandra imprisoned Willump in her citadel. Nunu freed him with Braum's help and turned her Dark Ice back into True Ice, which briefly restored her sight. She let them go, intending to watch and prepare the boy for the battle against the Void.
Turning points
- Being blinded by Volibear and turning to the Watchers
- Sacrificing her sisters to seal the Watchers
- Letting Nunu and Willump go after he restored her True Ice
Where their story stands now
Lissandra still leads the Frostguard and holds the seal, though the Watchers keep growing stronger. She remains hostile to Ashe and Sejuani, whom many Freljordians see as successors to her sisters.
Who they are tied to
- Ashe →Many in the Freljord see Ashe as the reincarnation or heir of Avarosa, and Lissandra is openly hostile to her Avarosan tribe, with Frostguard forces raiding its settlements.
- Sejuani →Sejuani is believed to carry on Serylda's line, and Lissandra treats her and the Winter's Claw as hostile rivals.
- Ivern →A gentle tree-like spirit who tends life across Runeterra, redeeming his past as a warlord.
- Nunu & Willump →A boy and his yeti companion who adventure through the Freljord.
- Trundle →The cunning frost troll king who serves Lissandra.

Where this fits in the story
- The Freljord · step 1
The Watchers and the Iceborn
The Watchers, beings from the Void with no form of their own, turned humans of the Freljord into immortal Iceborn who served them and prepared the world for oblivion.
- The Freljord · step 2
The three sisters
Avarosa led an Iceborn rebellion against the Watchers, and her sister Lissandra wove a spell of True Ice that entombed them beneath the Howling Abyss. Lissandra paid for it with her sisters and now watches the seal.
- The Freljord · step 3
Ornn and Volibear
Demigods shaped the early Freljord. Ornn, the craftsman, withdrew after his conflict with the storm-god Volibear ended the Hearthblood civilization.
- The Freljord · step 4
Three tribes today
Ashe leads the Avarosan, who want a united Freljord. Sejuani leads the Winter's Claw, who follow raiding and tradition. Lissandra leads the Frostguard, who keep the seals. The True Ice holding the Watchers weakens a little more every year.
