Who they are
Janna is a wind spirit, sacred to the ancient seafaring port that Zaun grew out of.
Their story belongs to Zaun. The smoggy undercity where unregulated science pushes back.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
A bright bird before the storm
Janna is an ancient wind spirit whose Shuriman name means guardian. Sailors across Runeterra told of a bright blue bird and a whistling warning before storms, and those tales spread her fame.
- Step 2
Shrines in the port
Devotees built statues and shrines to her, especially in the port city that became Zaun, praying for calm seas and good winds. Campaigns against supposed false idols did not end their faith, and many wore blue bird amulets.
- Step 3
Shield after Shurima's fall
After the Shuriman empire fell and war spread across the deserts, Janna shielded Zaun from the turmoil.
- Step 4
Fading faith
As Zaun industrialized, people turned from old beliefs to technology and her worship declined.
- Step 5
The flood
When the River Pilt flooded and killed thousands, survivors saw her use wind to hold back the water and calm the smoke from fires. Faith in her returned, and Zaunites took up devotions and amulets again.
- Step 6
Recent kindnesses
She has appeared in physical form to comfort a Zaunite orphan. She also helped the navigator Nilah and her crew defeat the sea monster Iascylla and protect Piltover's shores.
Turning points
- Shielding Zaun after Shurima collapsed
- Stopping the Pilt flood and renewing faith in her
- Defeating Iascylla alongside Nilah's crew
Where their story stands now
Janna remains Zaun's protective spirit with no fixed home, defending the vulnerable. Her place among the other spirit gods and the limits of her power are not detailed in the lore.
Where this fits in the story
- Zaun · step 1
From port city to undercity
Zaun began as an ancient seafaring port sacred to Janna. Around 772 AN the site was drowned in a catastrophic excavation, and it was rebuilt as the undercity below Piltover.
- Zaun · step 2
Chemtech and Shimmer
Without rules, Zaun's alchemists pushed science further. Singed's Shimmer serum can enhance soldiers and also became a major illegal drug that drives the underground economy.
- Zaun · step 3
The Day of Ash and Silco
Vander and Silco led a failed uprising on the Day of Ash, and hundreds died. Silco then built a criminal empire on Shimmer until his adopted daughter Jinx killed him.
- Zaun · step 4
A fractured city
After Silco the Chembarons split, Piltover occupied the undercity, Noxus intervened and Viktor rose to prominence. Zaun is now represented in Piltover's politics, but the peace is uneasy.
