Character · Bilgewater

Twisted Fate

Card sharp of the port.

Who they are

Twisted Fate is a card sharp from Bilgewater's criminal underworld.

Their story belongs to Bilgewater. A lawless harbor where anything can be bought, and the dead come ashore.

Their story, step by step

  1. Step 1

    A river boy

Twisted Fate was born Tobias Felix to nomadic river folk of the Serpentine Delta, and settled towns shunned them while buying their goods. He learned card reading from his grandfather and how to spot tells from his aunt. By his teens he was extremely good at games like Krakenhand, though people accused him of cheating.

  2. Step 2

    Cast out

After he won large sums, angry losers attacked his camp for revenge. Tobias ran into the dark and left his people to face it. By dawn they had left without him, and he was alone on the riverbank with his grandfather's deck.

  3. Step 3

    A drifter and a partner

He gambled his way through settlements, picking out the boastful, the arrogant and the cruel, and took the name Twisted Fate. At a gambling table he met Malcolm Graves and saw a kindred spirit. Graves supplied muscle and Twisted Fate the plans, and they pulled off heists including cracking Piltover's Clockwork Vault.

  4. Step 4

    The split

A heist went badly wrong. Graves was caught and sent to the prison called the Locker, and Twisted Fate escaped. He failed in his attempts to rescue his partner, and he finally left his birth name behind.

  5. Step 5

    Bilgewater

Miss Fortune hired him to steal and return a dagger from Gangplank's warehouse, and there he met Graves again, who believed he had been betrayed. Their fight set the warehouse on fire, and Gangplank captured both men and planned to execute them. Miss Fortune blew up Gangplank's flagship, and Twisted Fate, who cannot swim, saved Graves from drowning. They agreed to work together again, though trust was fragile.

Turning points

  • Fled his camp and was cast out by his people
  • Met Graves and began their partnership
  • Failed to free Graves from the Locker
  • Saved Graves from drowning in Bilgewater

Where their story stands now

Twisted Fate has no fixed home and keeps working with Graves while trying to rebuild trust. A later story hints at romantic feelings between the two. Open threads include a sea witch they angered and whether his growing magic will keep developing.

Where this fits in the story

  1. Bilgewater · step 1

    The Serpent Isles

The islands are older than the port. The Buhru people live there and follow Nagakabouros, a faith about testing willpower.

  2. Bilgewater · step 2

    The Reaver King

Gangplank ruled the port as the Reaver King. His murder of Sarah Fortune's parents set her on the path to bring him down.

  3. Bilgewater · step 3

    Miss Fortune's revenge

Miss Fortune destroyed his ship, then consolidated control over the port and eliminated the Corsair's Conclave. Gangplank survived with Illaoi's help, and now rule of Bilgewater is disputed between them.

  4. Bilgewater · step 4

    The Harrowing

Each time the Black Mist from the Shadow Isles reaches Bilgewater, the dead rise. Illaoi's divine power is one of the port's defenses.
