Who they are
Kassadin survived exposure to the Void and hunts rifts with a void-touched suit.
Their story belongs to The Void. A realm of nothingness that wants to unmake the world.
Their story, step by step
- Step 1
Bait in the Great Sai
Kassadin was an orphan hired as bait for merchant caravans crossing the Great Sai desert. He survived the attacks of predators and became a guide. His name comes from a Shuriman phrase meaning roughly whom the desert knows.
- Step 2
A family
While guiding expeditions through ancient ruins, he fell in love in Zirima and settled with his wife in the rocky canyons to the south. They had a daughter, Kai'Sa. He kept guiding and brought home stories, content with a settled life.
- Step 3
The village lost
Returning from Piltover, he met refugees who said the Void was consuming their homes. He hurried back and found his village destroyed, and his wife and daughter apparently lost.
- Step 4
Drink and a rumor
He sank into depression and drank in Zirima until he heard of sacrifices to a prophet serving an underground horror. He recognized the pattern of Void activity like the fall of Icathia and swore revenge.
- Step 5
Arming himself
He gathered Zaunite technology, Ionian blessings and the Nether Blade of Horok, a weapon from the first Ascended warriors, to fight the Void.
Turning points
- Finding his village destroyed
- Vowing revenge after hearing of the prophet
- Taking up the Nether Blade and Void-touched gear
Where their story stands now
Kassadin wanders the ruins of Icathia hunting Void creatures and the prophet Malzahar, while his body, mind and spirit slowly corrupt from his gear and the Void. Kai'Sa may in fact be alive, which he does not know.

Where this fits in the story
- The Void · step 1
What the Void is
The Void lies beyond reality. Its masters, the Watchers, had no form or self-awareness at first and want to unmake Runeterra.
- The Void · step 2
The Freljord
The Watchers turned humans in the Freljord into immortal Iceborn. Avarosa led a rebellion, and her sister Lissandra entombed the Watchers in True Ice beneath the Howling Abyss. Some escaped, and those trapped made the first Voidborn.
- The Void · step 3
Icathia
Around 2500 BN the Icathians rebelled against Shurima, dug up a mysterious weapon and opened a huge rift. It destroyed their civilization and released countless Voidborn. The Rupture is still there.
- The Void · step 4
Today
Nine runic seals slowly weaken, and Voidborn keep appearing. Some champions hunt them while others, like Malzahar, serve the Void or open new rifts.
