What happens in the game
Alliance diplomacy in Kul Tiras and Horde diplomacy in Zandalar expose internal histories that neither faction can simply command.
The war eventually intersects with Azshara and N'Zoth, showing how faction hatred creates openings for powers older than either coalition.
The story, step by step
The Fourth War
The burning of Teldrassil and battle for Lordaeron turn faction rivalry into mass displacement and contested responsibility. Kul Tiras and Zandalar must resolve internal crises before either can serve as an ally.
Empires and resistance
Jaina confronts her history with Kul Tiras, while Zandalar faces blood-god corruption and royal succession. Saurfang's rebellion challenges Sylvanas's rule from within the Horde rather than treating loyalty as obedience.
From faction war to the Old Gods
Azshara uses the fleets' conflict to open Nazjatar, and N'Zoth turns division into an entry point for his return. The champions defeat him through titan-linked power, but Sylvanas's departure carries the unresolved moral and cosmic conflict forward.
What the story is really about
Faction identity can demand refusal
Saurfang's arc argues that preserving the Horde may require opposing its warchief when honor has become a slogan for atrocity.
Old enemies benefit from present hatred
Azshara and N'Zoth do not replace the faction war; they exploit the political failures that made their openings possible.
How it ends
N'Zoth is defeated and the armistice ends the Fourth War's main campaign, but Sylvanas escapes after rejecting the Horde's political order.
What changes afterward
- The Horde begins moving away from rule by a single Warchief.
- Sylvanas's path leads directly to the breaking of the veil above Icecrown.
How it connects forward
Shadowlands begins when Sylvanas shatters the Helm of Domination and opens the way into death.
