Northrend

The frozen heart of the Scourge war and Arthas's tragic end.

What it is

Northrend turns Arthas from a remembered catastrophe into an immediate enemy. Alliance and Horde expeditions arrive with their own rivalries, but the Scourge requires a scale of cooperation neither faction finds easy.

The region is the climax of the Lordaeron thread. Read the Undercity and Plaguelands first if you want Arthas's fall to feel like the cause of a world rather than a single raid destination.

Northrend also tests what victory costs. The campaign requires expeditions to cooperate against the Scourge, yet the political rivalry they bring north repeatedly threatens the solidarity the final assault needs.

The short version

  • Arthas and the Lich King are the central lens for Northrend.
  • The Scourge threat forces both factions to look beyond their local disputes.
  • Its conclusion changes the meaning of the northern human and Forsaken stories.
  • The war against the Lich King is both a campaign of coalition-building and a reckoning with the failures that made Arthas possible.

The story in 5 steps

  1. Step 1

    Sail north

The factions bring their rivalry to a continent where neither can afford to ignore the other.

  2. Step 2

    Trace Arthas's legacy

The Scourge makes the personal tragedy of Lordaeron an ongoing military reality.

  3. Step 3

    Assault the frozen throne

The campaign converges on the source of the Scourge's organized power.

  4. Step 4

    Live with the aftermath

Victory does not erase the damaged lands, political wounds or fear the war leaves behind.

  5. Step 5

    Separate victory from repair

Defeating the Lich King ends an immediate command structure; it does not restore the people and places shaped by it.
