What happens in the game
The campaign revisits Arthas's fall through the lands and people transformed by it, culminating in the assault on Icecrown Citadel.
Tirion Fordring's Argent Crusade creates the cross-faction structure needed to challenge an enemy whose army grows from every death.
The story, step by step
War in Northrend
Alliance and Horde expeditions pursue Arthas into a continent marked by the Scourge, titan facilities and indigenous powers. The Wrathgate demonstrates both the need for cooperation and the factions' capacity to destroy it.
The machinery around death
Ulduar reveals titan systems and Yogg-Saron's corruption, while the Argent Tournament prepares a cross-faction force. These campaigns widen the expansion beyond revenge without losing sight of Icecrown.
The Frozen Throne
At Icecrown Citadel, Arthas kills the champions before Tirion breaks Frostmourne and releases its souls. Bolvar takes the crown because the uncontrolled Scourge still requires containment, turning victory into another burden rather than clean closure.
What the story is really about
The enemy recruits through death
Every casualty can strengthen the Scourge, making faction pride strategically self-defeating as well as morally costly.
Containment is not redemption
Bolvar's sacrifice prevents catastrophe but leaves the institution of the Lich King in place, with consequences that later stories reopen.
How it ends
Arthas is defeated, but Bolvar Fordragon takes the Helm of Domination to contain the Scourge, preserving a burden that later becomes central to Shadowlands.
What changes afterward
- Arthas's personal tragedy reaches its conclusion.
- Bolvar becomes the jailer of the Scourge rather than allowing it to run uncontrolled.
How it connects forward
Cataclysm shifts from the frozen north to a worldwide disaster caused by Deathwing.
