2004Classic AzerothCanon status: Evolving story
What happens in the game
The Alliance and Horde establish new capitals and uneasy identities while the Forsaken, Scourge remnants and elemental powers keep the old wars active.
Classic has no single protagonist or final cutscene; its raids and regional campaigns form a shared escalation toward threats such as Ragnaros, Nefarian and Kel'Thuzad.
The story, step by step
A world after the Third War
New adventurers enter faction societies still rebuilding from Warcraft III. Local campaigns establish the Forsaken, night elves, orcs and human kingdoms as uneasy coalitions rather than uniform nations.
Threats beneath the faction war
Onyxia's manipulation, Ragnaros's elemental servants and the Qiraji war reveal dangers that cross borders. Raids turn separate leveling stories into collective campaigns whose causes are rooted in older Azerothian history.
Naxxramas
Kel'Thuzad's necropolis returns the Scourge to the center of attention. Its assault gives Classic an escalation rather than a single ending and points directly toward the unresolved reign of the Lich King.
What the story is really about
The player begins inside plural histories
Race and starting zone change what the world's recovery means; there is no single neutral introduction to Azeroth.
Cooperation coexists with rivalry
Alliance and Horde conflict remains real even when threats repeatedly demonstrate that neither faction can secure the world alone.
How it ends
The original era ends with Azeroth still divided but capable of mounting large coalitions, just as the Dark Portal reopens.
What changes afterward
- Faction identity becomes a lived geography rather than a strategy-game summary.
- Blackrock and the Plaguelands establish conflicts revisited by later expansions.
How it connects forward
The Burning Crusade carries both factions through the Dark Portal into the remains of Draenor.
