What happens in the game

Class orders and artifact weapons organize resistance beyond the Alliance-Horde divide. Illidan's return forces the coalition to use a weapon whose methods it once condemned.

The war moves from the Broken Isles to Argus, where the heroes confront the machinery sustaining the Legion's endless return.

The story, step by step

  1. The Broken Shore

    The Legion invasion kills Varian Wrynn and Vol'jin and shatters the first assault. Class orders form around shared disciplines, temporarily creating institutions that cross faction command.

  2. Pillars, Suramar and Illidan

    The search for the Pillars of Creation passes through the Broken Isles and the occupied city of Suramar. Illidan's return forces allies to distinguish between understanding his long strategy and endorsing every sacrifice he made.

  3. Argus

    The Army of the Light and Azeroth's champions invade the Legion's homeworld, free the titan souls and imprison Sargeras. Before capture, he drives his sword into Azeroth, making the victory the direct cause of the next global crisis.

What the story is really about

Ends do not erase methods

Illidan is necessary to victory, but necessity does not retroactively make exploitation virtuous.

Identity beyond faction

Class orders show durable solidarities based on vocation and shared threat, even as Alliance and Horde rivalry later returns.

How it ends

Sargeras is imprisoned after wounding Azeroth with his sword; the Legion's command is broken, but the planet begins bleeding Azerite.
