Outland

A shattered world where the old Legion war becomes a present-day invasion.

What it is

Outland is Draenor after catastrophe: broken land, fractured peoples and the open wound of the Dark Portal. It takes the conflict beyond Azeroth without leaving Azeroth's stakes behind.

Its story gathers Illidan, the draenei, the blood elves and Legion forces in one place. Read it before the Broken Isles to understand why the Legion's later return has so much unfinished history.

Outland's fractured geography mirrors its political condition. The draenei seek a future after flight, blood elves seek a source of survival and Illidan builds a defensive tyranny; each answer to the Legion's pressure creates new obligations and victims.

The short version

  • The Dark Portal takes the main story beyond Azeroth for the first time.
  • Outland connects Illidan's Warcraft III choices to the Burning Legion's long campaign.
  • Blood elves and draenei become playable faction stories here.
  • Outland turns the Burning Legion conflict into competing survival strategies rather than a single united front.

The story in 5 steps

  1. Step 1

    Cross the Dark Portal

Azeroth's war expands when its heroes enter the shattered remains of Draenor.

  2. Step 2

    Meet the survivors

The draenei and blood elves give the conflict personal, political stakes beyond the battlefield.

  3. Step 3

    Follow Illidan

Illidan's rule of Outland is both a response to the Legion and a new source of danger.

  4. Step 4

    See the Legion's reach

Outland proves the Legion is not a distant myth, setting up the war that returns in Legion.

  5. Step 5

    Compare survival strategies

The region becomes clearer when Illidan, Velen and the blood elves are read as people answering the same pressure in incompatible ways.
