Final Fantasy

A guide to Final Fantasy worlds: separate continuities linked by crystals, summons, sacrifice and reinvention.

What is The Final Fantasy anthology?

Final Fantasy is an anthology, not one shared fictional history. Each numbered entry normally has its own world, cast and rules; recurring names such as Cid, chocobos, crystals and summons are traditions, not proof of a common canon.

This guide keeps those worlds distinct. It begins with the classical crystal stories, then follows the complete Final Fantasy VII world, the ongoing Eorzea saga of Final Fantasy XIV and Valisthea from Final Fantasy XVI.

The Final Fantasy VII remake project is its own evolving retelling. Square Enix has announced its final part, Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, for spring 2027, so it is labelled as upcoming rather than treated as released story.

Final Fantasy is an anthology, not a single shared world. This guide therefore connects its games by their recurring moral questions—crystals, memory, sacrifice, environmental responsibility and chosen family—while keeping Gaia, Eorzea, Valisthea and Spira as distinct continuities.

The strongest reading path moves between individual lives and the systems around them: Shinra's Mako economy, Spira's pilgrimage, Valisthea's treatment of Bearers and Eorzea's alliances all show why a world-saving story needs more than a final battle.
