Final Fantasy VI

Terra and the Returners resist an Empire exploiting magic, only for Kefka to seize divine power and break the world.

1994World of Balance and World of RuinCanon status: Fixed main story

What happens in the game

The first half follows the resistance and Terra's discovery of her Esper heritage. The midpoint denies the expected victory: Kefka moves the Warring Triad and creates the World of Ruin.

Celes gradually reunites the scattered party. Their decision to confront Kefka is meaningful because each has found a reason to live beyond the failed world they once hoped to preserve.

The story, step by step

  1. Empire and the Espers

Terra begins as an enslaved magical weapon before joining the Returners. The ensemble gathers around the Empire's extraction of Esper power, while Terra's parentage links the human and magical worlds the Empire treats as resources.

  2. The world ends

At the Floating Continent, Kefka betrays Emperor Gestahl and moves the Warring Triad. The heroes fail to stop him; the continents break, ecosystems collapse and Kefka becomes the center of a ruined world.

  3. Choosing to live

Celes searches for scattered companions, each resolving a personal reason to continue. Their rebuilt fellowship enters Kefka's tower and rejects his nihilism not because suffering is unreal, but because relationships create meaning within it.

What the story is really about

Failure is the midpoint

The heroes cannot restore the old world. The second half asks whether action still matters after the conventional objective has already been lost.

An ensemble of recoveries

No single chosen hero carries the answer. Each character's renewed commitment makes the final resistance possible.

How it ends

The party defeats Kefka, magic fades from the world, and Terra survives by holding onto her human bonds rather than magical origin alone.

What changes afterward

  • The ruined world makes recovery, not restoration, the emotional conclusion.
  • Terra's identity becomes a choice about relationships rather than blood.

How it connects forward

Final Fantasy VII creates another separate industrial world where the use of planetary energy drives the conflict.
