What it is
Shadowlands moves the story into the afterlife after the veil between worlds is broken. It takes longstanding character losses and questions about death literally, while asking whether the systems behind judgment and redemption can be trusted.
This is an important bridge for current characters. Anduin's trauma, Sylvanas's accountability and the fate of old allies continue to shape how they enter later eras.
The afterlife setting cannot settle the ethics of loss by explaining its machinery. Instead, it exposes how easily cosmic systems can make suffering feel administratively inevitable, which is why Sylvanas, Anduin and their survivors return changed rather than simply absolved.
The short version
- The veil between life and death is broken, opening the Shadowlands to Azeroth's heroes.
- The expansion centers consequence: especially for Sylvanas and Anduin.
- Its emotional aftermath carries into Dragonflight and The Worldsoul Saga.
- Shadowlands makes accountability more difficult by showing that explanation is not the same as justification.

- Step 4

- Step 5
Bring consequence back home
The story's lasting question is not only what exists after death, but how the living respond after learning it.
