Warlords of Draenor

Draenor

An alternate past that creates a new war instead of repairing the old one.

What it is

Draenor is not a simple flashback. It is an alternate version of the orc and draenei homeworld, created when the past is disrupted and an Iron Horde gains the means to threaten Azeroth.

The story is useful because it shows Warcraft's history as contingent. Familiar names do not guarantee familiar choices, and the attempt to weaponize another timeline creates consequences that outlast the campaign.

Warlords of Draenor is deliberately not a simple prequel. Its alternate history lets familiar names make different choices, then asks what responsibility Azeroth's visitors have when their intervention creates consequences in a world that is real to the people living there.

The short version

  • Draenor is an alternate timeline, not the destroyed Outland revisited.
  • The Iron Horde transforms a past conflict into a new invasion threat.
  • The era feeds directly into the Legion's return.
  • Alternate Draenor uses time travel to test responsibility, not to erase the original history of Outland.

The story in 5 steps

  1. Step 1

    Break the timeline

A plan to alter history creates a portal between worlds and a new enemy.

  2. Step 2

    Meet another Draenor

Familiar peoples exist under different pressures and have made different choices.

  3. Step 3

    Fight the Iron Horde

Azeroth must stop an invasion built from a past it thought it understood.

  4. Step 4

    Open the Legion's door

The crisis leaves opportunities the Burning Legion can exploit.

  5. Step 5

    Respect the alternate world

The story works when its inhabitants are treated as people with a future, not as a museum of characters from a history the player already knows.
