What happens in the game
The targets reveal that Assassins and Templars are competing over methods as well as territory. Each confession challenges Altaïr's certainty that obedience makes him righteous.
Al Mualim has secretly claimed the Apple of Eden and uses it to impose the peace he says he serves.
The story, step by step
A broken Creed
Altaïr compromises a mission through arrogance, leading Al Mualim to strip his rank. Nine assigned assassinations become a disciplinary journey across Masyaf, Damascus, Acre and Jerusalem.
Nine confessions
Each target explains a project presented as order, medicine, trade or security. Their connections show that the Crusade conceals a coordinated Templar attempt to control the Holy Land through the Apple of Eden.
The mentor's betrayal
Robert de Sablé reveals Al Mualim as the hidden tenth conspirator. Altaïr resists the Apple's illusions, defeats his mentor and begins reforming an Assassin order whose principles had been contradicted by blind obedience.
What the story is really about
The Creed requires judgment
Nothing is true does not mean nothing matters; Altaïr learns that discipline must sharpen moral inquiry rather than replace it.
Peace imposed by control
Templars and Al Mualim promise an end to conflict by removing choice, establishing the series' central ideological dispute.
How it ends
Altaïr defeats Al Mualim, resists the Apple and begins reforming the Brotherhood; Desmond learns that Abstergo is searching his ancestral memories for Isu sites.
What changes afterward
- Altaïr transforms from obedient prodigy into critical Mentor.
- The modern Animus conflict begins around Desmond.
How it connects forward
Assassin's Creed II moves to Renaissance Italy and another ancestor whose life teaches Desmond through the Animus.
