What happens in the game
Letho's assassination campaign is tied to Nilfgaard's strategy of destabilizing the North before invasion. Geralt's route through Flotsam, Vergen and Loc Muinne changes according to the allies he chooses.
The political branches reveal different parts of the same crisis: racial conflict, royal ambition, mage politics and imperial preparation all converge at Loc Muinne.
The story, step by step
The kingslayer
After Foltest's murder, Geralt is blamed and escapes with Vernon Roche to pursue Letho. Flotsam introduces Iorveth's Scoia'tael, the town's exploitation of nonhumans and the first choice that divides the entire middle act.
Two roads through the North
Roche's route centers on King Henselt, military power and Temerian survival; Iorveth's route centers on Saskia, Vergen and a multiethnic political experiment. Both uncover sorceress manipulation and Nilfgaard's use of assassins to fracture the kingdoms.
Loc Muinne
The summit collapses into violence as the Lodge, monarchs and empire pursue competing settlements. Geralt can rescue allies, intervene in political outcomes and decide Letho's fate after learning that the kingslayers prepared the ground for Nilfgaard's invasion.
What the story is really about
Perspective changes the available truth
The branch is not cosmetic: each alliance reveals people, motives and events the other route cannot fully see.
States weaponize grievance
Real injustice against nonhumans and real fears of invasion are repeatedly converted into tools by leaders seeking strategic advantage.
How it ends
Geralt can make different decisions about Letho and the political survivors, but Nilfgaard's coming invasion and the recovery of Geralt's memories carry forward.
What changes afterward
- The North loses leaders and unity.
- Geralt remembers Yennefer and resumes the search that leads into Wild Hunt.
How it connects forward
The Witcher 3 begins amid the Nilfgaardian invasion prepared by the second game's conspiracy.
