What happens in the game

The dwellers follow the records of Responders, Raiders, Free States and the Brotherhood, discovering that those communities nearly contained the Scorched before mistrust destroyed cooperation.

Their work develops into a regional rebuilding effort as new settlers and factions return. Later updates extend that recovery, so Appalachia is a continuing history rather than a story with one final ending.

The story, step by step

  1. Reclamation Day

Vault 76 opens twenty-five years after the bombs, sending its residents into an Appalachia emptied by the Scorched Plague. Holotapes and ruined headquarters reconstruct how the Responders, Free States, Raiders and Brotherhood each found part of the answer but failed to cooperate.

  2. Breaking the plague

The dwellers complete the abandoned factions' work: they inoculate themselves, rebuild the Scorched Detection System and reach the fissure sites. Defeating the Scorchbeast Queen contains the immediate existential threat, but does not restore the communities that died.

  3. A living Appalachia

Settlers, raiders, the Brotherhood and expeditions return in later updates. Their arrival changes the question from survival to ownership: who controls gold, technology, land and the institutions being rebuilt in a region whose first rescuers were the players themselves?

What the story is really about

Cooperation after institutional failure

The pre-player factions possessed complementary knowledge. Their destruction makes mistrust, rather than ignorance, Appalachia's defining catastrophe.

History that keeps moving

Its live structure makes recovery cumulative. New populations occupy a landscape whose earlier tragedy remains visible in records, ruins and faction inheritance.

How it ends

The original Scorched campaign ends with the dwellers containing its central threat, but Appalachia remains open to new crises, expeditions and political arrivals.

What changes afterward

  • It establishes the earliest playable reconstruction after 2077.
  • It shows the Brotherhood and other institutions forming before their later regional versions.

How it connects forward

The later West Coast games inherit a wasteland where vault survivors and organized factions have had generations to build new societies.
