What it is
Appalachia is Fallout's social experiment: a wasteland in which Vault 76 residents emerge to rebuild together. Its chronology sits near the beginning of the post-war era, while its playable world continues to grow through updates.
That distinction matters. The regional story is an early historical chapter, but its events, expeditions and seasonal additions are live material and should be read as ongoing rather than a closed campaign.
Appalachia is an earlier chapter of the post-war recovery: its communities coordinate against the Scorched before a stable society exists. That cooperative history makes the region useful for reading Fallout as more than isolated vault stories.
Because Appalachia is set closest to the Great War, its stories retain the immediacy of institutions failing in real time. Responders, Raiders and settlers are not distant legends but recent attempts to organize care before a stable order exists.
The short version
- Fallout 76 is set near the beginning of the post-war timeline.
- Appalachia is a shared world with recurring official updates.
- New updates should be added as individual routes rather than overwriting earlier history.
- The Scorched crisis shows why scattered groups need shared knowledge, supply lines and trust before they can survive a regional threat.
The story in 6 steps
- Step 1
Leave Vault 76
Residents emerge with a stated mission to reclaim Appalachia.
- Step 2
Learn the region's failures
The first communities reveal why rebuilding is harder than simply surviving.
- Step 3
Rebuild together
Players create camps, alliances and new routes through a changing map.
- Step 4
Track live updates
New official stories belong alongside, not inside, the original timeline.
- Step 5
Make survival communal
The route follows communities learning that survival cannot remain private when the danger spreads through an entire region.
- Step 6
Read the earliest recovery
Use Appalachia to see how knowledge is passed between communities before the larger factions of later games define the wasteland.
