Santa Barbara · playing as Ellie and Abby
What revenge leaves behind
In this chapterAbby and Lev are captured and tortured by the Rattlers, leaving them near death when Ellie finds them on the coast.
The final pursuit costs Ellie the farm and nearly her life. On the beach she defeats an exhausted Abby, but Joel's memory changes the meaning of the moment. Ellie lets Abby and Lev leave, then returns to an empty farmhouse unable to hold on to her old life in the same way.
The ending does not present mercy as a reward. Ellie loses tangible parts of her former identity, including the ability to play the song Joel taught her, but she refuses to make one more death the proof of her love. The cycle stops only after it has taken almost everything she used to define home.
The beach strips the confrontation of every heroic excuse. Abby is emaciated, Lev is helpless and Ellie must actively cut them down before forcing the fight she imagined would bring peace. The memory that stops her is not Joel's murder but their final conversation, when Ellie said she wanted to try to forgive him. Sparing Abby preserves the possibility contained in that conversation. Returning to the empty farmhouse then shows the cost without declaring Ellie's future hopeless: she leaves the guitar behind, and with it the demand that grief must keep reenacting the past.
