The Last of Us Part II ends with Ellie sparing Abby and Lev on the Santa Barbara beach, then returning alone to the farmhouse after the revenge journey has cost her relationship, home and part of her identity.
What it means
The story does not make forgiveness erase the damage. Ellie stops the final act of revenge because she can finally imagine Joel as more than the violence surrounding his death, but the possibility of moving forward begins with loss rather than restoration.
