Arc 3 · 877 · playing as Eivor

Sigurd's fall and Basim's secret

In this chapterBasim reveals that he is the reincarnation of Loki and wants vengeance against Odin.

Basim tells Eivor that he is the reincarnation of Loki and that she carries the soul of Odin. His goal is revenge on the god who wronged him. Sigurd, manipulated by Basim and obsessed with an Isu relic, starts to believe he is a god.

Fulke captures Sigurd and Sigurd loses an arm. Eivor rescues him, they discover an Isu temple that simulates Valhalla, and Sigurd gives up leadership of Ravensthorpe to Eivor. The Asgard and Jotunheim visions place the Norse myths in an Isu context: the gods are Isu, and their conflicts echo in the present.

The fall of Sigurd is the game's most personal tragedy. The man who raised Eivor becomes a victim of a cosmic plan, and her love for him makes the choice to take his place painful. Basim's reveal reframes the earlier arcs: his friendship was real, but so was his plan.

The Isu simulation of Valhalla explains Viking religion as a memory of ancient technology, which is a central idea of the franchise. Basim's plan relies on turning Sigurd against Eivor. By making Sigurd believe he is a god, he removes Eivor's main support. The abdication scene is quiet and sad: Sigurd, wounded, hands his authority to the sister he once protected.

What unfolds

  1. Sigurd, manipulated by Basim and convinced he is divine after finding an Isu relic, becomes unstable.
  2. The Order agent Fulke captures Sigurd, who loses an arm.
  3. After Eivor rescues him they find an Isu temple simulating Valhalla, and Sigurd abdicates leadership of Ravensthorpe to Eivor.
  4. Eivor's visions of Asgard and Jotunheim reveal the Isu's past as the Norse gods.
  5. Sigurd's belief that he is a god is encouraged by Basim's manipulation.

Modern day · 2020 · playing as Layla Hassan

Layla and the Reader

In this chapterLayla finds that Earth's magnetic field is destabilising because of Desmond Miles's activation of the Isu towers in 2012.

Layla Hassan relives Eivor's memories in the Animus and learns that the Earth's magnetic field is failing, a consequence of Desmond's act in 2012. To stabilise it she enters an Isu simulation. The simulation traps her, and she chooses to work with a mysterious entity called the Reader. Layla's quest in the present is connected to the Isu simulation.

Layla's storyline echoes Desmond's: both are modern characters whose actions change the planet. The Reader is a meta-element, and the franchise uses it to prepare for later titles. Layla's choice shows that she values the mission more than her body.

The Reader is a meta-character, and the idea that the franchise's story is read by someone outside it is a signal that the series is changing.

What unfolds

  1. Layla Hassan relives Eivor's memories through the Animus.
  2. To fix it, Layla enters the Isu simulation but becomes trapped, choosing to work with the Reader instead of returning to her body.
  3. Layla's magnetic-field warning explains that the world is in danger because of Desmond's 2012 activation of the Isu towers.

Finale · 878 · playing as Eivor

Odin's choice

In this chapterAfter years of resisting Odin's influence, Eivor accepts she cannot suppress him forever.

Eivor has fought Odin's influence for years, but she accepts that she cannot silence him. She refuses both the Hidden Ones' and the Templars' offers. She travels to Vinland, where she spends her final years in conversation with Odin about the Great Catastrophe and the cycle of Isu reincarnation. The story closes with Basim meeting William Miles. The ending is about acceptance.

The ending is not about victory but acceptance. Eivor chooses to live with the god inside her instead of fighting or serving him. Refusing both Assassins and Templars echoes the philosophy of Odyssey: neither side has a monopoly on truth. Basim's final scene connects Valhalla to Mirage, since Basim's genetic memories become the next story.

The conversation with Odin in Vinland is a final statement that gods and mortals share the same cycle.

What unfolds

  1. Eivor refuses offers to join both the Hidden Ones and the Templars.
  2. Eivor travels to Vinland to spend her final years discussing the Great Catastrophe and Isu reincarnation with Odin.
  3. Basim meets William Miles, setting up the events of Assassin's Creed Mirage.
  4. Eivor's final years in Vinland mean she chose her own end rather than serving Odin or the factions.

The Irish arc extends the series' theme that no group has a monopoly on truth: the Children of Danu are both victims and aggressors. The Paris arc is based on a real siege and adds a European setting to the story.

DLC · playing as Eivor / Odin

Dawn of Ragnarök and The Forgotten Saga

In this chapterEivor discovers that Baldr orchestrated his own death to survive Ragnarök.

What unfolds

  1. In Dawn of Ragnarök, Eivor takes on Odin's role in Svartalfheim and battles the fire jotunn Surtr to rescue the god's son Baldr.
  2. In The Forgotten Saga, the player, as Odin, explores the roguelike realm of Niflheim and confronts Hel to resurrect Baldr in an endless cycle of reincarnation.
