Rome under the Borgia

In this chapterRome is controlled by the Borgia through towers and captains.

Rome is under Borgia control, with towers and captains in each district. Ezio kills the captains, burns the towers and frees the people. Each liberated district becomes a place to recruit new Assassins, citizens who join the Brotherhood. Ezio's Tiber Island base becomes the headquarters.

The tower system is the game's main innovation. It turns Rome into a puzzle of control, and the more Ezio frees, the more the city changes. Recruiting Assassins gives the game its title. The Brotherhood is no longer a few figures but a network of ordinary people. The Borgia's rule is shown as oppressive. Taxes, violence and fear make the city a prison.

What unfolds

  1. Ezio destroys the Borgia towers to free districts from control.
  2. He recruits new Assassins from among Rome's citizens.
  3. He rebuilds the Brotherhood through the Tiber Island base.

Leonardo, Machiavelli and Lucrezia

In this chapterEzio reunites with Leonardo da Vinci, who builds war machines for Cesare under duress.

Cesare forces Leonardo to build war machines. Ezio sabotages them and saves his friend. In Rome he meets Lucrezia, who is a more complicated figure than she appears. The guilds of Rome, the thieves, courtesans and mercenaries, become allies, giving Ezio resources and information. Leonardo's machines are a moral test: his inventions can heal or kill, and he is trapped. Ezio's loyalty to his friend is tested.

Lucrezia's role is ambiguous. She is both victim and schemer, and her relationship with Cesare is key to the Borgia story. The guilds show how different groups in Rome can be used for the Assassin cause.

What unfolds

  1. He destroys the machines to prevent Cesare from using them.
  2. He meets Lucrezia Borgia, Cesare's sister, who has her own plans.
  3. He gains allies among Rome's guilds.

Rodrigo's Death and Cesare's Rise

In this chapterRodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI, is poisoned.

Rodrigo's death leaves Cesare as the leader. He expands his army and threatens other cities. Ezio and the Brotherhood hit his captains and supply lines. After a series of defeats, Cesare retreats from Rome. The Assassins gain momentum, but the war is not over. Rodrigo's death is a major moment, since he was the main villain of AC II. His son proves to be a more ruthless leader.

The Brotherhood's strategy is a guerrilla war, using stealth and local support. It contrasts with Cesare's military approach. Cesare's retreat is a victory but also a setback; he is still dangerous.

What unfolds

  1. Cesare becomes the dominant Borgia and expands his army.
  2. Ezio and the Brotherhood strike at Cesare's captains.
  3. Cesare is forced to retreat from Rome.

The Apple and Cesare's Defeat

In this chapterEzio follows Cesare to Spain and retrieves the Apple of Eden.

Ezio pursues Cesare across Italy and Spain, finally recovering the Apple. Cesare is defeated and killed. Ezio takes the Apple back to Rome and hides it in a vault beneath the Colosseum. The Brotherhood is restored. The hunt for Cesare is a classic revenge arc with a twist: Ezio's goal is no longer vengeance but to protect the Apple.

Hiding the Apple in the Colosseum is a symbolic act: a Piece of Eden concealed in the heart of Rome. The Brotherhood's restoration shows that Ezio's leadership has created a legacy.

What unfolds

  1. Cesare is defeated and killed.
  2. Ezio decides to hide the Apple in the Colosseum's Vault.
  3. The Brotherhood is restored in Rome.

Present · 2012 · playing as Desmond

Desmond, Lucy and Juno

In this chapterDesmond and the team go to Monteriggioni's ruins to find the Apple in the Colosseum.

In the present, the team follows the clues from Ezio's memories to the Colosseum, where the Apple is hidden. Lucy reveals that she has been working for the Templars. Juno, a First Civilization entity, takes control of Desmond and forces him to stab Lucy. Afterward, Desmond collapses into a coma.

The twist about Lucy is a shock to the audience. Her kindness was a mask, and her death is both a punishment and a tragedy. Juno's appearance introduces the series' secret antagonist. She uses Desmond as a tool, and the story becomes about control of free will. The coma sets up Revelations, in which Desmond must resolve his memories.

What unfolds

  1. Lucy reveals that she is a Templar mole.
  2. Juno, a First Civilization entity, takes control of Desmond and forces him to stab Lucy.
  3. Desmond collapses into a coma after the Apple's vision.
