Ending explained

Every route, what unlocks it and what each final choice means.

~4 min read

The Witcher 3's ending is decided by Ciri's survival and the road she takes afterward. Three outcomes exist: she becomes Empress, she becomes a witcher, or she dies in the White Frost. Her fate is not set by one choice. It depends on how Geralt treated her over the whole story and on whether he introduced her to Emhyr, and the political outcome of the war adds a second layer.

Did you take Ciri to meet Emhyr?

Empress

Empress: Ciri survives, Geralt took her to Emhyr and she accepts her role. She takes the Nilfgaardian throne and promises a different kind of rule.

Witcher

Witcher: Ciri survives but either did not meet Emhyr or Nilfgaard lost. Geralt helps her fake her death and she becomes a witcher, free from the throne.

Death

Death: Ciri dies in the White Frost. Geralt hunts the last Crone and grieves quietly. It is the bleakest ending, and it comes from a pattern of controlling or dismissing her.

What it means

The game's final point is that protection is not control. Geralt wins the war for Ciri only when he trusts her to choose her own path.
