You finished The Light Dragon. This picks up at Finale and goes to the end.

The last dive

In this chapterLink and the sages descend beneath Hyrule Castle, defeat Ganondorf's army and confront the restored Demon King.

The finale mirrors two acts of draconification. Zelda surrendered herself to preserve a future for others; Ganondorf does so to make defeat impossible and keep power for himself. Link wins with the sages and Light Dragon, then repeats the opening fall with a different result: this time he reaches Zelda.

Both dragons are immense, nearly mindless expressions of prior intent. Zelda's body circles Hyrule in patient protection, while Ganondorf's exists only to dominate the sky. The contrast makes sacrifice morally incomplete on its own. Meaning comes from what the self is surrendered for: another person's future or the refusal to let anyone else have one.

The final catch resolves the failure beneath the castle without pretending the intervening loss did not happen. Link's restored arm reaches Zelda because Rauru and Sonia briefly return what their era entrusted to him. Hyrule survives through accumulated acts of support, and the ending's intimacy makes that vast history land in two hands finally meeting.

The final dive works because it reunites the story's two timelines in one physical act: Link catches the person whose choice has carried him through the entire adventure.

What unfolds

  1. Ganondorf swallows his Secret Stone and becomes the Demon Dragon, sacrificing his mind for overwhelming destructive power.
  2. With the Light Dragon's aid Link destroys the Demon Dragon, after which Rauru and Sonia restore Zelda and Link catches her during their fall.
