The past · playing as The Knight
The vessel and the Void
In this chapterThe Pale King created vessels from Void in an attempt to contain the Radiance, selecting the Hollow Knight as the vessel meant to be truly empty.
The Knight discovers that the Hollow Knight was chosen from a host of Void-born vessels to contain the Radiance. Hornet's connection to the royal family makes the confrontation personal, but the deeper revelation is that the Knight also belongs to the discarded origin of the kingdom's plan.
The vessel story turns Hallownest's collapse into a failure of design. The Pale King wanted a container without desire, yet the kingdom treated living beings as replaceable parts of a seal. The Knight's return gives the Void one more chance, but it also exposes the cost of trying to solve consciousness by removing it.
The Abyss reveals that the Hollow Knight was never a miraculous child but the selected survivor of an enormous discard pile. The Pale King's solution required countless offspring to be treated as material, then required everyone to believe the chosen vessel contained no attachment. The tragedy is that the Hollow Knight's perceived purity was compromised by the bond created through being chosen and raised. Hornet stands outside that experiment yet belongs to the same royal bargain, which is why she can recognize the Knight as both sibling and possible answer without pretending the old plan was just.
What unfolds
The Knight discovers that they are another vessel from the Abyss, returning to Hallownest after escaping the place where the discarded vessels were left.
Hornet's connection to the Pale King and Herrah explains why she guards the seals while also challenging the Knight's right to break them.
The Black Egg · playing as The Knight
The Hollow Knight
In this chapterAfter the three Dreamers are defeated, the Knight can enter the Black Egg and face the infected Hollow Knight, the vessel that failed to contain the Radiance.
The Black Egg is the visible end of the original plan. Defeating the Hollow Knight can restore the seal for a time, but that outcome leaves the Knight carrying the same burden and does not confront the Radiance behind the infection.
The first ending is intentionally circular. The Knight wins the immediate battle by accepting the role that destroyed the previous vessel, so Hallownest receives continuity rather than healing. The ending is a solution only if survival inside the same structure counts as freedom.
Inside the Black Egg, the Hollow Knight repeatedly turns its weapon against itself, making the battle look less like a duel than an attempt to help the challenger reach the infection within. If the Knight has not uncovered the deeper truth, the only available response is substitution: absorb the Radiance, close the door and become the new object around which the kingdom waits. The visual victory conceals a structural defeat. The player has mastered Hallownest's map and enemies but still obeys the Pale King's original assumption that one silent child must carry everyone else's unresolved history.
What unfolds
If the Knight defeats the Hollow Knight without confronting the Radiance, they inherit the seal and become the next vessel holding the infection.

What the Void remembers
In this chapterThe Void Heart unites the Void and allows the Knight to enter the Hollow Knight's dream, where the Radiance can be fought directly.
The Knight's deeper exploration changes the final confrontation. Instead of replacing the Hollow Knight, they enter the dream and face the Radiance directly, allowing the Void to end the force that has kept Hallownest infected.
The alternate endings do not simply add a stronger boss. They revise the meaning of the Knight's journey: the Void is no longer only the material used to make vessels, but a collective force capable of refusing the Pale King's old arrangement. The cost remains sacrifice, but the cycle is no longer repeated in the same form.
The Void Heart represents recognition rather than a stronger container. By accepting kinship with the discarded vessels, the Knight can enter the Hollow Knight's dream and confront the Radiance as the source of the infection. Hornet creates the opening, the Hollow Knight's remaining will resists from within, and the Void rises as something collective rather than disposable. The conclusion still refuses a conventional restoration: Hallownest does not return to its golden age. What changes is that the kingdom's future is no longer secured by repeating the sacrifice that caused its deepest wound.
What unfolds
Hornet helps create an opening against the Hollow Knight, and the Knight uses the Void to destroy the Radiance and end the infection's source.
The Godmaster content adds further endings tied to Godhome, but those challenge variants do not change the base Hallownest history established by the main route.
