The finale · playing as The player character
Seal or open the ancient magic
In this chapterRookwood is defeated before the final repository is reached, leaving Ranrok as the last force capable of breaking the seal.
The final battle turns the repository's warning into a physical threat. Ranrok absorbs the corrupted power and becomes a dragon-like enemy. After he falls and Fig dies, the student can keep the magic hidden or open it, but neither choice reverses the cost of the rebellion.
The ending deliberately leaves the repository's moral question unresolved. Victory prevents Ranrok from claiming the power, but it does not prove that the Keepers were right forever or that the student should inherit their fear. The choice is about responsibility without a clean consequence system, not a simple good-or-evil branch.
Ranrok's transformation makes the repository's danger undeniable but also narrows the final decision. The student defeats someone using the power destructively, then must decide what to do with the same source while grieving Fig, the person who shared the investigation rather than merely testing them. Keeping it sealed accepts stewardship without solving the original ethical problem. Opening it claims that the Keepers' secrecy should end, but offers no institution capable of supervising what follows. The ambiguity is the point: magical ability can win the battle, while judgment must continue after the credits.
