Ending explained

Every route, what unlocks it and what each final choice means.

GTA V ends with Franklin choosing between two assassination orders and a third plan. Killing Trevor fulfills the FIB's demand; killing Michael fulfills Devin Weston's; Deathwish gathers the trio for a coordinated counterattack. Deathwish leaves Michael, Franklin and Trevor alive and wealthy, but it does not erase Michael's original betrayal. It is an alliance rebuilt around boundaries rather than a return to innocence.

What did Franklin choose?

What it means

All three endings ask whether advancement means accepting the sacrifices selected by people above you. Franklin's most independent act is refusing the false choice and making the powerful absorb the risk they exported onto him. The heists provide money, but the ending measures freedom through authorship: who gets to decide which relationships are expendable and which debts must be paid.

consequences

Deathwish matters because Franklin rejects a false choice authored by richer and more powerful men. It is not forgiveness; it is a decision to stop letting those men decide which relationship is expendable. The ending is best read against the earlier turning points: it does not erase their damage, but shows what the protagonists choose to carry forward after it.
