outcome

Sephiroth kills Aerith and her White Materia falls into the water. Cloud keeps the Black Materia and the party prepares to go north. The Whispers and the alternate timeline imply that the story is no longer a retelling of the original.

What it means

The ending asks whether destiny can be rewritten. By showing a world where Zack lives, Rebirth suggests that grief and loss are not inevitable, and the final part of the trilogy will decide.
