In this chapterZidane Tribal and the Tantalus theatre troupe kidnap Princess Garnet of Alexandria, who actually wants to escape.
The game opens as a theatrical performance interrupted by a kidnapping. Zidane and his Tantalus troupe plan to take Princess Garnet, but she wants to leave her mother, Queen Brahne, who has become aggressive. Garnet changes her name to Dagger and joins the group.
Steiner, her loyal knight, pursues them, and Vivi, a black mage who is confused about his identity, tags along. The group crosses the Evil Forest and the Ice Cavern, learning to cooperate along the way. The prologue sets the game's fairy-tale tone. It is light and humorous, yet the stakes are real, since Brahne's change and the war machine are explained later.
Zidane is a charming rogue whose flirting hides a loneliness. He does not know his origin, and his search for a place to belong is the story's heart. Vivi's introduction is the other emotional anchor. The young black mage asks what it means to be alive, a question the game answers at the end.
What unfolds
Garnet, who takes the name Dagger, flees her mother, Queen Brahne, who has become cruel and warlike.
Captain Steiner of the Knights of Pluto and Vivi, a young black mage, join the escape.
The group crosses the Evil Forest and the Ice Cavern to reach the Mist-free lands.

Lindblum, Burmecia and Cleyra
In this chapterAt Lindblum the party meets Regent Cid, who is secretly under a spell.
In Lindblum the party meets the Regent Cid, a frog-like sovereign. Alexandria attacks Burmecia and Cleyra, destroying the kingdoms with the aid of black mages and the general Beatrix. Freya, a dragon knight from Burmecia, joins the party. The party investigates and learns that Brahne is being manipulated by a mysterious man named Kuja. The war is not a simple conquest but part of a larger plot.
The invasion of Cleyra is a heart-wrenching sequence. The sand-covered village is a haven of peace destroyed by Alexandria's brutality. Freya's search for her lost love Fratley adds a tragic subplot. Her quest shows how war scatters people. Kuja is the game's smooth villain. A narcissist in elegant clothes, he is more dangerous than Brahne because he understands power.

Queen Brahne's army invades Burmecia and Cleyra, aided by black mages.
General Beatrix leads Brahne's army against Cleyra, and Freya of Burmecia joins the party.

Alexandria's Fall
In this chapterKuja turns Bahamut against Alexandria and Queen Brahne is killed; Garnet loses her voice after her mother's death.
Brahne uses the summon Bahamut to attack Lindblum, and Kuja turns on her. Garnet's grief at her mother's death is so strong that she loses her voice. The party also learns that Garnet is a summoner from Madain Sari, whose clan was destroyed in the past. The world changes: the war has been a prelude to a larger conflict.
Garnet's mutism is a human reaction to trauma. The player sees her grow stronger through it and eventually find her voice. The Bahamut attack shows Kuja's cruelty: he uses a god-like creature as a weapon and makes the world fear his power. Brahne's death is both tragic and ironic. She became a tyrant in her quest for strength and died at the hands of the man who manipulated her.
What unfolds
Garnet and the party learn that she is a summoner whose home was destroyed in a past war.
Kuja, who has been using Brahne for his own plans, is revealed as the force behind the attack.
Garnet's grief causes her to lose her voice, and she becomes a mute heroine.

Madain Sari, Oeilvert and Ipsen's Castle
In this chapterZidane learns he is a Genome, an artificial being created by Garland to be a replacement for Kuja.
Madain Sari is a ruined village where the summoner clan lived. The party meets Eiko, a young summoner, and learns the history of the clan. At Oeilvert they discover the source of the Black Mages and Kuja's ambition. At Ipsen's Castle Zidane discovers his own origin: he is a Genome, an artificial being created by Garland on Terra. His entire life is part of a larger plan.
Zidane's revelation is one of the best character twists in the series. His charm and confidence are shaken, and he has to decide whether his life is real. The Black Mages are tragic figures. They were created as soldiers, but they gained personalities and fear. Vivi's connection to them is the game's emotional core.
Eiko's cheerful presence provides contrast. She is a child who has been alone for years and finds a family in the party.
What unfolds
In Madain Sari the party learns about the summoner clan and Eiko, a young summoner.
At Oeilvert, an ancient ruin, the party finds Kuja's weapon and the origin of the Black Mages.
Ipsen's Castle, a trial, tests the party and teaches Zidane the truth about his origin.

Terra, Bran Bal and Garland
In this chapterThe party travels to Terra, the dying home world of the Genomes.
Terra is a dying planet that has been sending Genomes to Gaia. Garland's plan is to merge Terra and Gaia by exchanging their souls. The party learns that the Genomes are meant to replace people. Kuja, who learns he is a defective Genome with a short life, kills Garland and takes the power of Trance, becoming a threat to both worlds.
Garland is a cosmic planner who has no malice. He believes in saving his world, and his coldness comes from duty. Kuja's tragedy is that he is a created being who is afraid of dying. His desire to destroy everything is a nihilistic reaction to his own mortality.
The Terra setting shows the game's richness. A fantasy world and a dying civilization are connected by a plan that predates all the characters.
What unfolds
Garland reveals his plan to merge Terra and Gaia by exchanging souls.
Kuja, who is also a Genome, learns that he has a limited lifespan.
Kuja kills Garland and takes the power of Trance.

Memoria and Necron
In this chapterThe party enters Memoria, the place of the Crystal, to stop Kuja.
The final dungeon is Memoria, where the party relives their memories. They defeat Kuja, who summons Necron, a being that wants to destroy all life, and defeat him too. The Crystal is restored, and Gaia is saved. Zidane stays behind to save his friends, but returns in the final scene to Garnet.
Memoria is a thematic gauntlet that makes the player remember the whole adventure. Each party member faces their own fears. Necron's philosophy is a mirror of Kuja's: a desire for a cold void. The party's reply, to live and love, is the opposite. The ending is hopeful. Zidane and Garnet reunite, Vivi's legacy lives on and the theatre of Tantalus performs one last time.
What unfolds
Kuja is defeated, but he summons Necron, the embodiment of death.
The party defeats Necron and the Crystal restores Gaia.
Zidane, who sacrificed himself to save his friends, is missing, but he returns to Garnet at the end.
