Fallout 3 ends at the Jefferson Memorial, where the purifier can only be started by someone who enters its radiation chamber. The Wanderer decides who pays the price. In the original ending the Wanderer or a companion dies; the Broken Steel expansion lets the Wanderer survive and keep fighting.

The purifier brings clean water to the Capital Wasteland, ending the Enclave's plan. The Enclave is shattered, the Brotherhood gains influence and the Wanderer's name becomes a legend. The slides show what happens to Megaton, Rivet City, Tenpenny Tower and the other settlements, based on earlier choices.

What it means

The game is about inheriting a dream. The Wanderer's parents wanted clean water for everyone, and the ending asks whether the Wanderer will give everything to finish it.
