Farum Azula · playing as The Tarnished

Maliketh and Destined Death

In this chapterAfter the Erdtree burns, the Tarnished reaches Crumbling Farum Azula and defeats Maliketh, releasing Destined Death into the final stage of the story.

Farum Azula exists outside the stable flow of the Lands Between, a fitting place for the last safeguard of the old order. Maliketh carries Destined Death inside him, and defeating him releases the force that the Golden Order had kept away from its own subjects.

The ruins make the final transition feel like a world coming apart rather than a road leading neatly to a boss. Maliketh is both jailer and prisoner of the death he guards. When he falls, the Tarnished does not simply gain access to the finale; they remove the metaphysical rule that allowed the Golden Order to pretend death could be excluded from its promise of perfection.

Farum Azula places the Tarnished inside evidence that Marika's order was never the first arrangement of divine power. Ancient dragons, a previous lord and broken time surround Maliketh, whose identity is tied to the Rune he was ordered to contain. The theft of one fragment made Godwyn's death possible, so his duty has become penance for a failure he cannot reverse. Defeating him releases Destined Death completely. The act is necessary to enter the Erdtree, but it also returns mortality to a world whose ruling system defined perfection by excluding it, allowing the capital itself to become ash.

What unfolds

  1. Maliketh, guardian of Destined Death, is defeated in the collapsing ruins of Farum Azula, and the released rune turns the Erdtree's protection into ash.
  2. Maliketh is Marika's shadow and the keeper of the Rune of Death, binding his personal failure to protect it to the event that made Godwyn's death possible.
  3. Farum Azula's ruined dragons and broken time reveal an order older than Marika's, weakening the claim that the Golden Order was ever the world's only possible form.

The finale · playing as The Tarnished

What order comes after the Shattering

In this chapterThe final choice determines whether the Tarnished repairs the existing order, follows a special questline, or replaces the world's rules with another vision.

After Farum Azula, the capital is no longer a living seat of power but the remains of a system the Tarnished must interpret. The final guardians fall, the Elden Ring is reached and the journey turns into authorship: repair the order, reform it, leave it behind or impose a new law on the ruins.

The ending is not a reward for completing a checklist of Great Runes. It is the moment when every road becomes a philosophy. The Tarnished inherits a world whose rules have already failed, and the final choice decides whether history is treated as a foundation, a warning or a prison. Becoming Elden Lord is therefore only the beginning of deciding what that title means.

Godfrey's return makes the final claim a confrontation between the first exiled Tarnished and the one who completed the journey. Beyond him, Radagon and Marika are revealed as the divided vessel at the center of the same order: one shattered the Ring, the other tried to repair it, and both remain bound inside its consequences. The Elden Beast then defends the system beyond either personality. Victory leaves the Tarnished with authority but no neutral ending. Repair, curse, perfect order, death restored, the Age of Stars and the Frenzied Flame each decide what kind of distance should exist between power and ordinary life.

What unfolds

  1. The Tarnished returns to the ruined capital and faces the final guardians before reaching the broken Elden Ring.
  2. The Tarnished defeats the final guardians of the Elden Ring and stands before the fractured order with the power to decide what follows Marika's reign.
  3. The final chamber reveals Radagon and Marika as two identities of the same divine vessel, turning their apparent conflict into the internal fracture at the center of the Golden Order.
  4. Defeating the Elden Beast removes the final guardian of the Ring, but the available endings show that victory grants authority without supplying a morally neutral way to use it.
