Venice, Forlì and the Apple

In this chapterEzio's hunt for the Templars leads to the Apple of Eden, which changes hands more than once as the Templars and Ezio fight over it.

In Venice, Ezio uncovers the Templar network and kills Emilio Barbarigo. In Forlì, he helps Caterina Sforza hold the city and meets Machiavelli. In 1488, he intercepts the Apple of Eden and faces Rodrigo Borgia. Rodrigo is forced to flee, and Ezio takes the Apple. The Venice section is a stylish urban thriller, with canals, rooftops and masquerades. It is also the first time the Apple of Eden appears.

Caterina Sforza is a strong, intelligent ally and a love interest. Her fight against the Orsi shows that Ezio's fight is not only for revenge but for people. The Apple is a source of temptation. It shows visions and gives its holder power, and Ezio's decision to keep it from Rodrigo is both strategic and moral.

What unfolds

  1. In Venice, Ezio kills Emilio Barbarigo and investigates the Templar network.
  2. In Forlì, he allies with Caterina Sforza and defends the city from the Orsi brothers.
  3. Machiavelli, a young statesman, joins the Brotherhood.

Savonarola and the Bonfire of the Vanities

In this chapterSavonarola tries to use the Apple on the angry crowd, but Ezio disarms him.

Savonarola, a fanatical preacher, has taken control of Florence using the Apple of Eden. Ezio kills his lieutenants one by one and provokes the people to rise against him. In the end Savonarola tries to use the Apple on the crowd, but Ezio disarms him. The preacher is condemned to burn, and Ezio kills him mercifully, declaring that everyone should find their own path.

Savonarola is a mirror of the Templars. He believes he is saving souls and is willing to burn books and people. The Apple amplifies his certainty. Ezio's mercy at the end is a sign of growth. He started as a man consumed by revenge and now chooses compassion. The scene also shows the Apple's danger: it can control crowds. This is the central threat of the series.

What unfolds

  1. Ezio pursues the Apple to Florence, where Girolamo Savonarola has used it to remove the Medici.
  2. He kills Savonarola's nine lieutenants.
  3. Ezio mercifully kills Savonarola before the crowd burns him.

Seq. 12 · 1499 · playing as Ezio

The Vatican and the Vault

In this chapterEzio infiltrates the Vatican and confronts Rodrigo Borgia, now Pope Alexander VI, who wields the Papal Staff.

The Vault is hidden under the Vatican. Ezio infiltrates the Pope's palace and confronts Rodrigo, who has the Papal Staff, another Piece of Eden. After a duel, Ezio spares him, having overcome his hatred. Ezio uses the Apple and Staff to open the Vault and meets Minerva, a member of the First Civilization. She speaks to Desmond, explaining that her people created humanity and were destroyed by a catastrophe.

The decision to spare Rodrigo is the emotional climax. Ezio chooses to move on, which is a surprising and humane ending to a revenge story. Minerva's message turns the game into science fiction. The First Civilization, the Vaults and the prophecy tie Ezio's story to Desmond's. The Vault itself is an anticlimax in terms of action but a revelation in meaning: it is a warning, not a treasure.

What unfolds

  1. In 1499, the Assassins discover that the Vault lies under the Vatican.
  2. Ezio defeats Rodrigo but spares him.
  3. Using the Apple and Staff, Ezio opens the Vault and meets Minerva, a hologram of the First Civilization.

The Safehouse and the Solar Flare

In this chapterAbstergo agents attack the safehouse, and the team evacuates.

After Minerva's message, Abstergo attacks the safehouse. The team escapes and Lucy explains that the First Civilization was destroyed by a solar flare, and a new one is coming in 2012. The mission becomes global: find the Pieces of Eden and prevent the disaster. Desmond must return to the Animus to find the next clue.

The ending shifts the series from historical adventures to an apocalyptic thriller. The 2012 deadline gives the next games a ticking clock. Lucy's information is both a revelation and a manipulation. She knows more than she says, and the audience should be wary. The Assassins' mission now has a cosmic purpose, and Ezio's story becomes a path to the Apple's secrets.

What unfolds

  1. Lucy reveals that a solar flare will destroy the Earth, as it did the First Civilization.
  2. The Assassins need Desmond to find the Pieces of Eden to prevent the catastrophe.
  3. Desmond prepares to return to the Animus.
