En este capítuloFour warriors carrying dim crystals arrive in the kingdom of Cornelia.
The story begins with four youths, the Warriors of Light, each holding an orb. They arrive in Cornelia, where a knight named Garland has kidnapped the princess. The party defeats him, and the king rewards them with a bridge. With the bridge rebuilt, the party can leave Cornelia. They have been told that the four crystals have gone dark, and they must restore them.
The opening is a classic fantasy prologue that sets the tone: a simple rescue that leads to a quest. The dungeon is small but memorable. Garland is a minor villain, and his later role in the story is the first clue to the game's twist. The player chooses the party's classes, and the story is a blank slate for their personalities.
Lo que ocurre
They defeat Garland, who kidnapped Princess Sarah.
The king of Cornelia rebuilds a bridge as a reward.
The party travels north to Pravoka.

The party fights pirates at Pravoka to gain a ship. In Elfheim they wake the prince and are given the way to the Marsh Cave. In the cave they defeat the Lich, one of four Fiends, and restore the Earth Crystal. The Fiends are the game's four elemental villains. Each controls a crystal and lies in a dungeon.
The pirate fight is a chance to gain mobility and gives the world a sense of scale. The Earth Crystal restoration shows the cost of the game's mission: each crystal revives a part of the world.

At Elfheim, the party wakes the Prince of Elfheim with a herb.
In the Marsh Cave the party finds the Crown, which leads to the dark elf Astos.

The Chaos Shrine and the Time Loop
En este capítuloThe party travels back in time 2,000 years to the Chaos Shrine.
The Warriors travel through time to the Chaos Shrine. There they defeat Chaos, who turns out to be Garland, who sent himself back in time and became the villain. The Warriors break the loop, ending the cycle that Garland created. The time loop is a rare twist for an NES game. It makes the first boss and the last boss the same person, and the story circular.
Garland's motive, to become a god by looping, is a classic example of a villain's hubris. The victory restores the world and ends the series' first story.
Lo que ocurre
They defeat Chaos, who is revealed to be Garland.
Garland sent himself back in time, creating a loop in which he becomes Chaos.
