Chapter V · 2161 · jugando como Vault Dweller
The Cathedral
En este capítuloThe Dweller enters the Cathedral, the Master's underground base, built around a prototype vault.
The final confrontation takes place in the Master's Cathedral. The Dweller can negotiate, using the fact that super mutants cannot have children to convince the Master his plan is doomed. If that works, the Master destroys himself.
Alternatively the Dweller can fight him, blow up the base or accept his offer. Joining him ends the game as a tragedy: the Dweller becomes a super mutant and returns to destroy Vault 13. In the Cathedral the Master explains his plan. The Dweller can end the threat by force or by talking.
The ability to defeat the villain through talking was a landmark for RPG design. It rewards players who have paid attention to the plot and invested in intelligence, and makes the Master a tragic figure whose philosophy collapses when he faces the truth.
The combat ending is straightforward but costly. The Master is powerful, his guards are strong, and the Dweller needs equipment and allies. The self-destruct option offers a compromise, trading safety for certainty.
The Master's offer to join him matters because it is tempting. For a survivor with a dying home, a world made safe by force sounds attractive. The bad ending, with the vault massacred on security footage, is a reminder that good intentions can become horror. The argument that super mutants are sterile is a famous ending: the Master realises his plan has no future.
Joining the Master is a possible ending, which makes the player's choice more serious.
Lo que ocurre
In a conversation with the Master, the Dweller can convince him that the super mutants cannot reproduce and his plan will fail.
Alternatively, the Dweller can fight the Master or set off the base's self-destruct.
If the Dweller sides with the Master, he is turned into a super mutant and leads the army against Vault 13.
The Children of the Cathedral serve as the Master's public face, recruiting humans while hiding what happens inside.
The Dweller can fight the Master and destroy the vats, convince him that super mutants cannot reproduce and his plan will fail, join him, or blow up the Cathedral.

The Vault Dweller's Exile
En este capítuloThe Dweller returns to Vault 13 as a hero, but the Overseer refuses to let the Dweller back in.
After defeating the Master the Dweller returns home to find that the Overseer will not let him in. The Dweller has seen too much and might persuade others to leave. Despite saving the vault twice, the Dweller is exiled.
The ending slides show what happened to the towns and companions that the Dweller met. Shady Sands, the Hub, Junktown and the Brotherhood each have an outcome shaped by earlier choices. The final image is of the Dweller walking into the desert, a hero with no home. The hero is welcomed and then expelled, ending the story.
The exile is the series' most famous twist. It is bitter because it is rational: the Overseer is protecting the vault, and the Dweller's experience is a risk. The ending argues that closed societies cannot survive contact with a changing world.
The slides at the end are a form of storytelling that the series made its own. They treat choices as history, with consequences measured over years, and give the player a feeling of lasting impact. For later games, the Dweller's wandering is the seed of Shady Sands' growth into the NCR. The Vault Dweller becomes a legend, a distant ancestor, and the story continues in Fallout 2 with their descendant.
The exile shows the vault as a place that values order over truth, and this theme returns in later games. In the epilogue the Dweller's story becomes the origin of wasteland communities such as the Followers and Shady Sands.
