Sanctuary Hills and Vault 111

En este capítuloThe bombs fall as the family reaches the vault; they enter cryo pods, believing it is decontamination.

The game begins on the morning of the Great War. The Sole Survivor, a veteran of the Army, and their spouse are in their suburban home in Sanctuary Hills with their baby. Vault-Tec arrives, the bombs drop, and the family is rushed into Vault 111, where they are frozen in cryo pods.

Two hundred years later the Survivor wakes as men in hazmat suits kill their spouse and take Shaun. The Survivor falls back into cryosleep and wakes for good in 2287. After escaping the vault, they find Sanctuary Hills overgrown and Codsworth the Mr. Handy still waiting. The prologue shows the world before the bombs, a happy family and a short Vault-Tec sales pitch, so the loss that follows is clearer.

The prologue is more personal than previous Fallout games. The player has a home, a family and a reason to search, and the first scenes are designed to build attachment before taking it away. The dog Dogmeat, the neighbours and the robot Codsworth give the pre-war world a warmth that makes the ruins hurt.

The cryo scene is the emotional centre. The Survivor is helpless, and the brief view of Kellogg's face is the first clue that will lead through the game. The Vault-Tec experiment is revealed to be a cover for kidnapping and testing, a continuing theme of the series.

The return to Sanctuary shows the passage of time. Houses are rubble and the neighbourhood is a ghost town. The Survivor is a relic of the old world, an outsider in the new one, and that tension shapes every faction interaction. The prologue connects the personal and the global in a few minutes: a family's normal life is destroyed by a nuclear war and then by a kidnapping.

Codsworth's loyalty gives the player an anchor in a changed world; he has waited for 210 years. The spouse's death and Shaun's kidnapping give the Sole Survivor a clear goal, but the search is not simple.

Concord and the Minutemen

En este capítuloAt Concord the Survivor meets Preston Garvey and the last Minutemen, trapped in the museum by raiders.

With Dogmeat the Survivor travels to Concord, where they meet Preston Garvey and a group of survivors from the Minutemen. After defeating the raiders and a Deathclaw, the Survivor returns to Sanctuary with the Minutemen and takes on the role of leader. The Minutemen give the Survivor a purpose, but the main goal remains Shaun. Garvey suggests Diamond City, where the news and detectives of the Commonwealth gather.

Concord is the player's introduction to the Commonwealth's factions. The Minutemen are the first group to ask for help. The Minutemen show the Commonwealth's tradition of citizen soldiers. They protect settlements and are the Survivor's first allies. Their weakness is also clear: they have lost their leaders and their hope, and the Survivor must decide whether to rebuild them.

The settlement system is introduced through this chapter. The Survivor can build houses, set up defences and attract settlers, turning the game into a rebuilding story as well as a search. The power armor sequence is a classic Fallout moment: a spectacular piece of technology found in a forgotten place. It gives the Survivor a symbol of the old world and a way to fight stronger enemies.

The Minutemen once protected the Commonwealth and have fallen apart. Their rebuilding is a long-running side story of the game. Power armour is a symbol of the pre-war military, and it gives the player a powerful tool early on.

Diamond City and Nick Valentine

En este capítuloPiper suggests the detective Nick Valentine, a synth detective, who has a lead on Shaun's kidnappers.

Diamond City is the Commonwealth's biggest settlement, built inside Fenway Park. Piper's newspaper is critical of the Mayor and the secretive way the city treats synths. She sends the Survivor to Nick Valentine, a detective who is himself a synth. After rescuing Nick from Vault 114, the Survivor and Nick investigate. Their clues lead to a mercenary called Kellogg, who might know where Shaun is.

Diamond City is the Commonwealth's biggest settlement. It is also afraid of synths, the artificial humans made by the Institute. Nick Valentine is one of the most beloved companions in the series. He is a synth with the memories of a pre-war detective, and his sense of identity drives much of the game's theme. He is a bridge to the Institute story.

The synth question is the main moral issue of Fallout 4. Synths are artificial humans who look and feel human, and the Institute uses them as slaves and spies. Diamond City hates and fears them, and the Survivor sees this prejudice early. Piper adds a human perspective, representing a free press in a dangerous place. Her relationship with the Mayor shows the dangers of power and the importance of truth.

Diamond City's mayor, McDonough, is hostile to synths, and his secret later becomes a major story. Nick Valentine is a synth who can feel human and who helps the player understand synths as people. The fear of the Institute's replacements is the Commonwealth's main paranoia.

Lo que ocurre

  1. At Diamond City the Survivor meets Piper, a reporter for Publick Occurrences, and Mayor McDonough.
  2. The Survivor rescues Nick from a Vault 114 gang, and he helps with the case.

Kellogg and the Memory Den

En este capítuloThe Survivor confronts Kellogg at Fort Hagen and kills him, taking his cybernetic brain implant.

Kellogg's trail leads to Fort Hagen. After a tough fight, the Survivor kills him and takes the implant that holds his memories. Dr. Amari's Memory Den lets the Survivor relive his past, revealing that he was hired by the Institute.

The memories also reveal that Shaun is no longer a baby. He grew up inside the Institute, and as an old man he is the one the Survivor must find. The mystery shifts from a kidnapping to a political conspiracy. Kellogg is a ruthless mercenary. His death gives the Sole Survivor the information needed to reach the Institute.

Entering Kellogg's memories is a notable change of perspective. The Survivor sees the night Shaun was taken from the point of view of the killer, and the moment is chilling. The scene shows how little Kellogg thought of the act and how much the Institute valued the child.

Kellogg is a fully realised antagonist: efficient, cynical and burdened by a life he cannot change. His death is not a triumph but a step to a larger truth. Dr. Amari's help introduces the idea that memory is a resource. The Institute can copy and control people's minds, and the Survivor's ability to see another person's past is both a tool and a warning.

Dr. Amari's memory machine is a Fallout 4 mechanism used for reliving the past.

Lo que ocurre

  1. Kellogg's memories show that he worked for the Institute and that the Institute holds Shaun.
  2. Dr. Amari at the Memory Den helps the Survivor explore Kellogg's memories.
  3. The memories show that Shaun, now an adult, is the head of the Institute.
  4. The trail leads to Conrad Kellogg, the mercenary who killed the spouse, and the Sole Survivor tracks him down and kills him.
  5. Kellogg's memories, viewed with the help of Dr. Amari, show that Shaun was taken to the Institute.

The Glowing Sea and Virgil

En este capítuloVirgil, a former Institute scientist transformed by an FEV experiment, gives the Survivor the means to build a teleporter.

The Institute hides underground and its entrance cannot be found on foot. Dr. Amari and the Memory Den lead the Survivor to Virgil, a former Institute scientist living in the Glowing Sea, the most radioactive region of the Commonwealth.

After reaching his cave, the Survivor helps Virgil, who explains how the Institute's teleportation technology works and gives the Survivor the designs for a teleporter. It is the key to the Institute. The Glowing Sea is the most radioactive area of the Commonwealth. Virgil's lab holds the key to the Institute.

The Glowing Sea is the series' most striking environment: red skies, irradiated canyons and giant creatures. The Survivor needs protection and must be careful, and the journey feels like a descent into a hostile world.

Virgil is a tragic figure. He worked on the FEV and became a super mutant, and he is both a source of knowledge and a warning about the Institute's methods. His story links back to the original Fallout.

The teleporter is the first sign of the Institute's technological superiority. It shows the Survivor that the people they are looking for are not from the wasteland but from a world beyond it. Virgil is a former Institute scientist, which gives the player an outsider's view of the organisation. The Glowing Sea is a place of extreme danger that signals the Commonwealth's scale.

  1. Dr. Amari points the Survivor to Virgil, an escaped Institute scientist living in the Glowing Sea.
  2. The Survivor travels through the radioactive crater to the Virgil's cave, fighting mutated creatures.

  5. Virgil also has a way into the Institute through a teleportation device.

Into the Institute

En este capítuloThe Survivor builds the teleporter and enters the Institute, a hidden underground facility run by scientists.

The Institute is a clean, high-tech place that contrasts with the Commonwealth's ruins. The Survivor meets Dr. Li and the scientists, and then Father, the director. Father is Shaun, an old man who has lived his whole life underground.

He explains that the Institute creates synths and wants to protect humanity's future. He invites the Survivor to join, offering a place in their plan. The Survivor must now decide what to do with this knowledge. The Institute is a hidden research facility under the Commonwealth. The Sole Survivor meets Father, who is Shaun.

The reveal of Shaun's age is a cruel twist. The baby the Survivor searched for is gone; the man who remains is a leader who believes his work is right. The relationship between parent and child is complicated by the fact that they have never met.

The Institute is a believable villain because it is not simple. Its scientists want to improve life, and their synths are sophisticated machines that sometimes become people. The Institute denies that they are alive, and that denial is the moral problem. The scenes inside the Institute set up the faction choice. The Survivor can see the technology that could save the Commonwealth and the people who suffer for it.

The reveal that Shaun is Father is the story's biggest twist. The child the Sole Survivor lost is the person in charge of the Institute. Father's argument is that his work is meant to improve the world. The Sole Survivor's decision about the Institute defines the ending.

Lo que ocurre

  1. At the Institute, the Survivor meets Father, the director, who is Shaun, now an old man.
  2. Father reveals that the Institute has been creating synths, and asks the Survivor to join them.

The Factions Choose Sides

En este capítuloThe Survivor must choose between four factions: the Institute, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Railroad and the Minutemen.

With the Institute revealed, the Commonwealth's factions seek the Survivor's help. Maxson's Brotherhood wants to destroy the Institute and eliminate synths. Desdemona's Railroad wants to free synths and sabotage the Institute. Garvey's Minutemen offer a flexible alliance. The Survivor can work with one faction, and eventually must decide which one will win. Each has different quests and companions, and each leads to a different final mission.

The final act forces the Sole Survivor to pick a faction. The Brotherhood of Steel is a militaristic and paranoid group, but it has a coherent belief: technology is dangerous, and the Institute is the worst example. Maxson is a young, determined leader who is willing to use force to protect the Commonwealth.

The Railroad is a clandestine group that treats synths as people. Its members are idealists, but also reckless, and their methods of sabotage and disguise are risky. They offer the most humane choice, but at a cost of violence and secrecy.

The Minutemen are the most hopeful faction. They believe in community and mutual help, and their ending is the most open. The Survivor can use them to balance the others or to carry out a final plan of their own. The Brotherhood sees synths as a threat. The Railroad sees them as people. The Minutemen are the middle path, rebuilding the Commonwealth.

The factions' goals cannot all be met.

Lo que ocurre

  1. The Brotherhood of Steel, led by Elder Maxson aboard the airship Prydwen, wants to destroy the Institute and all synths.
  2. The Railroad, led by Desdemona, frees synths and fights the Institute in secret.
  3. The Minutemen, led by Preston Garvey, want to protect settlers and may help any side.
  4. The Brotherhood of Steel, led by Elder Maxson, and the Railroad, led by Desdemona, both want the Institute destroyed or changed.
  5. Each faction demands loyalty, and the Sole Survivor's choices lead to conflict.

Act III · 2287 · jugando como Sole Survivor

The Four Endings

En este capítuloIn the Brotherhood ending, Maxson and the Prydwen attack the Institute, destroying it and killing Shaun.

The endings are determined by the faction the Survivor chooses. The Brotherhood and the Minutemen destroy the Institute in an assault; the Railroad frees the synths; and the Institute path sees the Survivor take leadership and destroy the other factions.

Each choice has consequences for Shaun, the synths and the Commonwealth. The Survivor can sometimes persuade Shaun to hand over the Institute, or must fight him, and the final result depends on faction relations. Each ending resolves the Institute differently, and the consequences are shown in the epilogue.

The four endings are designed to show different views on technology and humanity. Brotherhood: control by force. Railroad: freedom through secrecy. Minutemen: community and consent. Institute: progress with a cost.

Shaun's fate is the emotional core. In several endings he dies or is left behind, and the Survivor must accept that the child they lost never came back. In the Institute ending, he gives them the leadership, and the Survivor takes the burden.

The Commonwealth after the game is shaped by the choice. The Brotherhood leaves a military presence, the Railroad leaves free synths, the Minutemen leave a network of settlements and the Institute leaves a new power. Every ending has a cost: the Institute's destruction removes its science, but keeping it means keeping its secrets. The Sole Survivor's relationship with Shaun is part of the ending in every route.

Lo que ocurre

  1. In the Railroad ending, the Survivor and the Railroad destroy the Institute from within, freeing the synths.
  2. In the Minutemen ending, the Survivor and the Minutemen destroy the Institute with a bomb.
  3. In the Institute ending, the Survivor takes over the Institute and destroys the other factions.
  4. The ending depends on the faction: the Institute is destroyed by the Brotherhood, the Railroad or the Minutemen, or the Sole Survivor takes over the Institute.
