Cesare forces Leonardo to build war machines. Ezio sabotages them and saves his friend. In Rome he meets Lucrezia, who is a more complicated figure than she appears. The guilds of Rome, the thieves, courtesans and mercenaries, become allies, giving Ezio resources and information. Leonardo's machines are a moral test: his inventions can heal or kill, and he is trapped. Ezio's loyalty to his friend is tested.

After a series of defeats, Cesare retreats from Rome. The Assassins gain momentum, but the war is not over. Rodrigo's death is a major moment, since he was the main villain of AC II.
