Jerusalem: Talal, Majd Addin and Robert de Sablé

En este capítuloHe is sent to kill Robert de Sablé, the Templar Grand Master, at the Third Crusade's camp in Arsuf.

In Jerusalem, Altaïr eliminates Talal and Majd Addin, and moves against Robert de Sablé, the Grand Master of the Templars, at the battle of Arsuf. In their duel Robert explains the plan and the Apple, and he reveals who is behind the Templars. Altaïr returns to Masyaf with the realisation that his master has deceived him. The ninth target is not on the list: it is Al Mualim.

Robert de Sablé is a sympathetic antagonist. He believes in a world without conflict and is willing to die for it. His speech about the Apple and the control of minds shows how a good intention becomes tyranny. The Arsuf sequence is a high point, with a battlefield and a duel. It shows the scale of the Crusades and the role of the Assassins in them.

The reveal that Al Mualim is the true conspirator changes the meaning of the game: Altaïr's obedience was a tool of the person he was supposed to fight.

Lo que ocurre

  1. In Jerusalem, Altaïr kills Talal, a slave trader, and frees the captives.
  2. He assassinates Majd Addin, the regent of Jerusalem.
  3. Robert reveals the Templar plan and that Al Mualim is involved.

Masyaf and Al Mualim

En este capítuloAl Mualim has taken the Apple and used it to control the people of Masyaf.

Al Mualim has used the Apple of Eden to control the minds of the Assassins. Altaïr fights his way to him, and in a final duel kills his former master. With the Apple in his hands, Altaïr discovers that it contains a map of the world, showing other artifacts. He chooses to keep it, and the map becomes a lasting legacy.

Al Mualim's plan is the logic of the Templars in the Assassin's form: eliminate free will to end conflict. His justification, that peace is worth any price, is the series' recurring argument. Altaïr's victory is moral as well as physical. He recognises that his old beliefs were manipulated, and his decision to keep the Apple is the beginning of a new path.

The map implies a world of hidden history. The Apple is only one of many, and the Assassins and Templars will fight over them for centuries.

Lo que ocurre

  1. Altaïr fights through the controlled Assassins and confronts Al Mualim.
  2. Altaïr kills Al Mualim and takes the Apple.
  3. The Apple shows a map of other Pieces of Eden around the world.

Desmond's Escape

En este capítuloVidic reveals that Abstergo is a modern Templar organisation seeking Pieces of Eden.

At the end of the memories, Vidic tells Desmond that Abstergo is the modern face of the Knights Templar and wants to find the Pieces of Eden. A rescue attempt by the Assassins fails. Vidic wants Desmond dead, but Lucy persuades him to keep him alive. In his room, Desmond discovers cryptic drawings in blood on the walls, left by a previous subject, which warn of a coming disaster.

The final scene turns the story from a historical adventure into a thriller about the present. The Templars are real and powerful, and Desmond is a key to their plan. Lucy's role is deliberately ambiguous. The audience suspects she is an Assassin mole, and her actions give Desmond a chance to survive.

The blood drawings are the series' first mystery. They suggest that the world is about to end, a theme developed in the later games.

Lo que ocurre

  1. Lucy, who is secretly an Assassin, keeps Desmond alive while Vidic decides what to do with him.
  2. Vidic orders Desmond killed, but Lucy persuades him to keep Desmond alive.
  3. Desmond finds drawings on his wall in blood, warning of an upcoming catastrophe.
